Things to do in and around Straiton.

Golf

Straiton is situated close to the coast and is within easy reach of the world class links courses of Turnberry and Troon and a great many other courses.

Fishing

The River Girvan is a 5 minute walk from The Old Garden Cottage and can provide excellent game fishing.  Various lochs are available within short distances, providing game and course fishing.  The coast south of Girvan provides good sea fishing for species such as cod, coalfish and bass.

Walking

Straiton is known as the Rambling Territory and it is not hard to see why. The village itself has a number of set walks ranging from easy strolls to more taxing hill walks.  The Galloway Forest lies to the south where The Merrick, the tallest mountain in the South of Scotland can be found, along with many more walking opportunities.

Cycling

With a range of minor roads and forest tracks surrounding Straiton it is a very popular destination for cyclists. This is both road and off-road cycling.  Guests have informed us that Old Garden Cottage is ideally suited as a base to start or finish the 7Stanes mountain biking venues at Glen Trool.  We have had a number of cyclists who have used us as a suitable stopping point for the End to End, Land's End to John O' Groats (or indeed John O' Groats to Land's End) journey.

History

Of course, Ayrshire cannot be visited without mention of Robert Burns.  However, there are many more historical attractions within Ayrshire such as Culzean Castle and Straiton's own beautiful Blairquhan Castle, location for the filming of The Queen.  Straiton was also used as the location for the film The Match.

Food and Drink

Within the village of Straiton we have The Black Bull Hotel, where you can have a fantastic meal and a warm welcome.  We also have the privilege of having The Buck Tearoom, where you can sample the famous homemade baking.  The local shop, Staiton Store, is a community cooperative and stocks a wide range of locally produced food.  Ayrshire can boast a very good range of dining locations, all within easy reach.
